Hey Gavin and Emma, just thought i'd ask for your feedbacks about the travelling that is required as part of your jobs. do you enjoy the travelling or has it become tiring and boring? and what is the most and least enjoyable travellling experience that you've experienced? and with which airline/carrier? _________________ 04: The Rising Son Cometh

Hi there
Well for me your cannot really beat Quantas or Gulf Air.. but I am in the priviledged position of flying Business Class on long haul flights. For economy class it is still BA that gives the most comfortable flight. But we also fly charter with other F1 teams to some of the European destinations as it is cheaper for us....Can you imagine the cost of flying 50 people to 18 races!??? nightmare...
The travelling gets you down by mid season.....the August break could not come soon enough after the middle flyaways when we are away from home for 2 weeks. This year is a nightmare with Australia GP, then a Sepang Test, then the Malay and Bahraini back to backs..... most of the team will be away from home for 6-7 weeks!! Living out of a suitcase and in airports and hotels all year can get you down, but you then get to the end of the season, and a result like we had in Brazil makes it all worth while.
Once Christmas is over you start to get itchy feet again, and long for the first GP and getting back to racing....so you are in the circle of 'oh god when will I get time at home' and 'god I cant wait to get racing again!'.
Having said that, we all realise that we are in pukka jobs that most people would kill for... I am one of only 11 PR's (SAF1 Team Media Communications Manager now don't you know!)....so I am an extremely lucky person.
Hope that this answers your question!

Flying can be stressful for some, not me I love flying But over the years I have found out that while you are stuck in that 33inch little box for 10+ hrs it is a really good place to think about the future (which restaurant to go to or a review of the things that happened at the origin, not work related of course!)
Leaving home 6-7 weeks are not so easy as I do that all the time but now there's something call a Mobile Phone which really can make the difference. Keep working hard and thanks for everything. |

Emma:
it's QANTAS btw... don't worry, you're not the only person that say q"U"antas as it is pronounced like so, even a lot of our overseas agents and members at our foreign stations make the same mistakes. QANTAS stands for Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service... which has become the national carrier as we know it in the 1930/40s.
i love flying as well but i don't get to do enough of it! most of it is domestic shorthaul on 737s A320s and 767s with Qantas or Virgin Blue... not long enough to make a difference. if i fly long haul it'll be to taiwan to see the folks over there once every so often. personally i prefer SQ over CX, MH or TG or CI or QF as SQ has excellent customer service in Y and a great PTV system. but last few times i went on QF and let's just say i wasn't too happy stuck in Y in a 767 for 10hrs... nightmare!! (although i got a flight deck tour and i was allowed to flip thru the logbook so i couldn't complain) however i'd much prefer the 747SP that used to fly to TPE but they're all scrapped by now.
cost of flying 50 people to 18 races? easy!! charter a BBJ or a A319Bizjet! unless if your name is Paul Stoddart of course who had an entire fleet of everything at his disposal (European Aviation), he was famous in 2002 for flying in with all of minardi's equipment onboard his own 747-200 and also flying in with other F1 personnel for long haul races. i had a long conversation with him about that and about the aviation business when we interviewed him in 2003 on our university production tv show.
Which airline/lease company do you guys charter with? just curious to ask... _________________ 04: The Rising Son Cometh
