Ok here are a few frequently asked questions about marshalling:

Someone who is interested in Motorsport and who wants to be involved in the sport without necessarily competing
What does a Marshal do?
Almost anything linked with the organisation and running of motorsport events - from club meetings to Grand Prix.

Almost anyone. As long as you are of average health all you need is enthusiasm.
Are Marshals paid?
No. All Marshals are volunteers who enjoy being part of motorsport.
Is it dangerous?
All forms of motorsport involve some danger, but as long as you use common sense and are aware of what dangers to watch out for you will be ok.
What duties do Marshals cover?
According to experience, the jobs offered include: Observer, flag marshal, course marshal, incident marshal, incident officer, spectator marshal, race administration, paddock marshal, pit marshal, startline marshal, telephonist, rescue unit crew, rally stage marshal, rally timekeeper, passage control marshal, sector marshal etc. etc. The list is almost endless. In fact Marshals can and do perform every official job function at all levels of the sport.

– meeting new people
– making new friends

Shouldn't marshals get some kind of training? Remember in Indianapolis how a marshal dropped his flag right onto the main straight, causing trouble. |

Marshals do get training but as they are all volunteers they have to fit their marshaling in around real jobs and family life. I actually thought the Indy flag accident was the sort of thing I may end up doing if they are ever daft enough to give me the flags But accidents and mistakes do happen and you just have to try and minimise the effects that a marshals mistake has on a race. _________________ Marshals do it track side! |
