In an astonishing about-turn, McLaren have been stripped of all constructor points for 2007 and have been handed a $100M fine (though some of that will be offset by TV income). Full FIA Statement available HERE Found guilty of breaking rule 151 of the code, McLaren will now struggle to maintain a credibility amongst sport fans that it was truly unaware of the advantages being taken. In an effort to keep the newly-found revival of general interest in the sport, no drivers will lose points. This lightly-veiled attempt to court favour with fans keeps the most important element of the season alive. The FIA write that this concession was due to the immunity needed to get drivers to release email information. Convenient. It is the opinion of this writer that if the drivers had emails showing complicity, and they did nothing to correct that, then they were complicit themselves and are being spared penalty as a purely financial decision to keep the TV audience and race attendances high. **Updated** It is now clear that DeLe Rosa and Alonso both knew that they were receiving privileged information from someone within a rival team. It is astonishing and disappointing that the FIA chose to do nothing about that, and indeed to offer them immunity to go after the team instead. Perhaps even more astonishing is that Alonso will be sitting in a McLaren starting at Spa.
